South Korea’s SK Hynix to buy Intel’s NAND business for $9 bn – Tech News by Post24x7

2020-10-20 16:54:00

Seoul: Intel has agreed to a $9 billion deal to sell most of its memory business to South Korea’s SK Hynix as it moves toward more diverse technologies while shedding a major Chinese factory at a time of deepening trade friction between Washington and Beijing.

Intel said it will keep its “Optane” business of more advanced memory products, which analysts say are mostly produced in the United States.

According to the plan confirmed by the companies on Tuesday, SK Hynix will acquire Intel’s NAND memory chip and storage business, including a related manufacturing site in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian. SK Hynix said the companies expect to get required governmental approvals for the deal by late 2021.

The transaction, if completed, could reportedly make SK Hynix the world’s second-largest provider of NAND flash memory chips behind Samsung Electronics, another South Korean chip giant.

Demand for flash memory has strengthened in recent months due to buying of personal computers and servers as the coronavirus pandemic forces millions to work from home.

Intel said it plans to invest proceeds from the transaction into advancing long-growth priorities, including technologies related to artificial intelligence and fifth-generation wireless networks.

“This transaction will allow us to further prioritize our investments in differentiated technology where we can play a bigger role in the success of our customers and deliver attractive returns to our stockholders,” Bob Swan, Intel’s CEO, said in a statement.

This story has been published from a wire agency feed without modifications to the text. Only the headline has been changed.

After Samsung, Xiaomi trolls Apple for removing chargers from iPhone 12 series – Tech News by Post24x7

2020-10-19 20:30:00
Apple

Apple has been in the news for a while now and well, not just for its new iPhone 12 series launch, but also for its massive announcement of not adding either the charger or the earphones with its newest models.

The “out-of-the-box” idea, well, literally, comes in a move that will help offset the higher costs of new screens and 5G chipsets, while also benefiting the environment. A USB C to lightning cable will be included instead.

This piece of news at the launch on 13 October received multiple mixed reactions from users across the world as well as other rival Android-based companies, where several of them “trolled” Apple for excluding the charger and earphones from its box.

Recently, Apple’s biggest rival, Samsung, took to social media to poke fun at the company for not including a charger with their latest iPhones. Since then, Xiaomi has also not left any stone unturned to troll Apple for its decision via.a tweet, which has now gone viral.

In the latest dig, Xiaomi posted a video on the micro-blogging site showing a person unboxing its Mi 10T Pro smartphone to reveal a power adaptor inside. “Don’t worry, we didn’t leave anything out of the box with the #Mi10TPro,” the Chinese smartphone maker wrote while sharing the video.

Since being posted last week, the clip has garnered over a million views and more than 34,000 likes.

“APPLE fanboys now: We dont need the charger in the box.. we’ve got enough money to buy a new one,” said one Twitter user.

“10/10 for marketing,” said another.

However, many users also supported Apple on its move to save the environment.

“If you give us support like Apple does to their customers, I will buy the charger on my own.

Software support should be the top priority, not the piece of plastic!!!,” tweeted one.

“Atleast they are thinking and taking important steps towards environment protection.I bet you will also follow the same trend in a year or 2 just like the headphone jack,” wrote another.

Recently, Samsung had also shared a similar post emphasising on the fact that the Galaxy phones do come with a charger.

“Your #Galaxy does give you what you are looking for. From the most basic as a charger, to the best camera, battery, performance, memory and even 120Hz screen on a phone,” Samsung wrote on Facebook yesterday, sharing a picture of a black charger that is included with its lineup of Galaxy phones.

Microsoft most imitated brand name by hackers in September quarter – Tech News by Post24x7

2020-10-19 18:35:00
Microsoft

Microsoft was the most frequently imitated brand name used in phishing attacks in September quarter, appearing in 19% of them globally, cybersecurity firm Check Point reports. The use of Microsoft’s brand name can be attributed to the fact that Microsoft products are widely used across enterprises and vast majority of employees using them have been working from home since the virus outbreak.

Researchers at Check Point came across malicious phishing emails sent in the name of Microsoft to lure users to click on a malicious link which would redirect them to a fraudulent Microsoft login page.

Using actual brand names or logos in phishing emails or webpages is a common practice and widely used by cyber criminals to make them look credible and get gullible users to click on malicious links, attachments and share login credentials. Attackers often use brand names that are more likely to get a click.

“There are currently billions of people now working remotely, many of them doing so for the first time in their lives. Hackers, sensing big opportunity, are imitating the brand most known for work—Microsoft. I expect Microsoft imitations to continue as we turn the New Year,” Omer Dembinsky, manager of data threat intelligence, Check Point said in a statement.

Google and Amazon which were the most imitated brand names in June quarter slipped down in the list to number 3 and 9 respectively in September as attackers lost interest in them. The other most imitated brand names in September quarter’s top five most imitated band’s list include DHL (9%), Google (9%), PayPal (6%) and Netflix (6%). According to Check Point, this is the first time DHL’s brand name featured in the top 10.

Further breakup of the findings reveal that email phishing accounted for 44% of attacks, web phishing for 43% and mobile phishing for 12%. Though Microsoft was the most imitated brand name in both email and web phishing, WhatsApp was the most imitated brand name in mobile phishing.

Dembinsky has urged remote workers to be extra cautious when receiving an email about their Microsoft account.

Micromax will be launching a new ‘in’ series in India. A new report by The Mobile Indian has revealed the potential specifications of the new phone. The report claims that the company may launch two new phones in the first week of November (most likely 2 November). One of the phones might be powered by a Mediatek Helio G35 processor and the other might feature MediaTek Helio G85 processors, both of which have been used in phones aimed at mobile gaming enthusiasts.

The phone that comes with the G35 chipset is expected to come with a 6.5-inch HD+ display and might come in two variants, one with 2GB RAM and 32GB of storage and the other with 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage. The 2GB variant of the device is expected to feature a dual camera setup as well. The 3GB variant on the other hand might get a triple lens setup.

The company claims that it was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for an Atmanirbhar Bharat. The price range is still not certain but the phones are expected to launch in the range of 7,000 to 15,000.

Since there’s no official word from the company about the specs or the availability of the device, the readers are suggested to take the information with a grain of salt. If the reports turn out true, the phones will be out in the open within a couple of weeks.
