Google search now lets you hum to it when you forget a song – Tech News by Post24x7

2020-10-16 19:17:00
Google

Google announced its newest feature, hum to search, on October 15, 2020. This option enables you to hum a song you cannot remember, to the Google Search widget or the latest version of Google app.

The California-headquartered technology company also extended this feature to its Artificial Intelligence(AI)-based assistant, Google Assistant. It works when you say, “Hey Google, what’s this song?” One can hum the tune, which doesn’t have to be pitch perfect, for ten to fifteen seconds and it then gives you a list of songs similar to the tune.

The list is generated by Google’s machine learning algorithms that identify the tune enabling them to give the “potential song matches.”

How does this work?

The company’s search models are trained to identify singing, whistling, humming or studio-recording of the tune. As the machine learning model identifies a tune, it is converted into a numeric sequence that will represent the song’s melody.

“A song’s melody is like it’s fingerprint,” said Krishna Kumar, Senior Product Manager of Google Search. Having their own unique identities, the tunes are matched to the “right fingerprint” by their machine learning models. As the number-based sequences are generated, the algorithm compares them to songs that are available across the globe.

Built on the work of Google’s music recognition technology, the models match the human version of the tune to a song that was recorded in a studio. This music recognition technology was used in Now Playing in Google Pixel phones and the SoundSearch feature on the Google app.

The “hum to search” feature is currently available in more than twenty languages on Android and works in English for iOS users.

Micromax to launch first smartphone in over two years next month – Tech News by Post24x7

2020-10-16 17:26:00
Micromax

Homegrown smartphone brand, Micromax on Friday announced its return to India’s smartphone market. The company has been out of the market for over two years now, having failed to battle against Chinese smartphone companies, which controlled the supply chain and brought the smartphone prices in India to an all-time low.

According to Rahul Sharma, co-founder of Micromax, the company will not make low-cost smartphones anymore, something it has always been known for. “We will only come out with performance-oriented products. You won’t see phones worth 3000, 5000 from Micromax anymore,” he said.

Sharma said Micromax plans to play in the 7,000 -10,000 to 20,000 -25000 segment and will sell — both online and offline — from early next month, bringing out an entire lineup of In branded phones by the end of the year. He claimed Micromax will have better phones than Chinese brands in the same prices that they offer. “Whatever features Chinese brands are giving, we’ll give at the same price point or at a better price point,” he said.

The company will start with two In branded phones in the first week of next month, but Sharma says an entire lineup of products will be launched by the end of the year. Sharma also said the company won’t run ads on its phones, something users have criticized Chinese smartphone players for. “It will be a very clean experience. All the software has been done by us and all updates will happen from India,” he said.

Indian smartphone brands have been eyeing a comeback ever since the Indian government announced its production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for mobile manufacturing. Both Lava and Karbonn, two well-known Indian brands, are expected to start selling smartphones soon as well. The scheme gives 4-6% benefits for manufacturing phones in India, with foreign companies being allowed these benefits on phones with invoice value about Rs. 15,000 only.

“Everybody was looking to Chinese phones because they were coming down heavily on pricing,” said Sharma. This is where the PLI scheme comes in, which allows Indian manufacturers to battle the Chinese in pricing. “If you can get revenues up to Rs. 10,000 crore then Rs. 600 crore comes straight to your bottomline. I think this is a great cushion that has been provided to all the Indian companies, that will help us to fight these guys,” he added.

Micromax’s In phones will also be followed by other connected devices, including air conditioners and more.

Apple online store in India down, company says updating with new changes – Tech News by Post24x7

2020-10-16 16:03:00
Apple

Apple’s new online store in India seems to be down. The company had launched the new online store last month. While the company’s website is still functioning, the link that leads to the main buying page seems to be down. At the time of writing this piece, the website states, “We’ll be right back”. The page also mentions that changes are coming to the store and has asked the user to check back soon. There is no specific reason made official by the company, so far.

The Cupertino tech giant launched its online store in India last month and is aiming to tap into the festive season sales. The company provided various offers through its online store on popular handsets which includes, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and the iPhone SE (2020). The discounted prices went live after the company unveiled the latest iPhone 12 series. Apple recently announced an offer on the iPhone 11. Buyers who purchase the iPhone 11 will be eligible to get free AirPods. The offer will be made available from 17 October.

The Apple online store provides customers with the same premium experience found in Apple Store locations around the world, delivered by online team members who are ready to offer their expertise, Apple said in a statement.

Such offers include direct customer support, trade-ins or exchange offers for used smartphones and iPhones, student discounts, contactless delivery and more.

In one of the major services provided by the Cupertino-based smartphone giant across the world, Apple will allow trade-in options for its iPhone models.

This essentially means that customers can now exchange any “eligible smartphone” or credit towards a new iPhone available on the site.

To do this, you will first have to select the iPhone model you wish to purchase, answer a few simple questions about your existing smartphone and the store will provide a trade-in value up to 35,000 that can be used to lower the price of a new iPhone. Customers will then have to pay the remaining value either in full or EMI to complete their purchase.

Indian Army

NEW DELHI :
Vice Chief of the Indian Army Lieutenant General SK Saini is to visit the US on a four day trip starting Sunday with the aim of boosting military cooperation – including training in niche areas, more joint exercises and procurements.

The visit comes days ahead of the India-US “2+2″ talks on 26-27 October in which the foreign and defence ministers of the India and the US are to review the entire gamut of bilateral and defence cooperation. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and US Secretary of Defence Mark Esper are to visit India for the meeting underlining the importance attached to the discussions. The India-US “2+2″ is seen as the last major event of the US diplomatic calendar before the 3 November presidential elections.

During his visit, Saini will visit the US Army Pacific Command (USARPRAC), the Army component of Indo-Pacific Command (INDOPACOM) and “exchange ideas extensively with the military leadership apart from witnessing training and equipment capabilities of US Army,” a statement from the Indian army said Friday.

Later Saini will also visit INDOPACOM where “aspects of military cooperation and furthering military to military engagement including procurements, training in niche domains, joint exercises and capability building will be discussed,” the statement said.

“The visit will further enhance the operational and strategic level collaboration between both armies, which is emphasised by the fact India is participating in two joint exercises with the US despite covid-19 restrictions. India providing free ration to about 80 crore poor for last 7-8 months: PM Modi – News in India by Post24x7

2020-10-16 14:06:00
Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India has been providing free ration to about 80 crore poor for the last seven to eight months amid COVID-19 pandemic.

“During the coronavirus crisis, many kinds of discussions are going on around the world about starvation and malnutrition. India has been providing free ration to about 80 crore poor for the last 7-8 months. During this time, India distributed foodgrains worth about Rs. 1.5 lakh crores to the poor,” Prime Minister Modi said during an event to release a commemorative coin of 75 denomination to mark the 75th Anniversary of India’s long-standing relation with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

“Another important work is being done to tackle malnutrition. Now such crops are being promoted in the country, which are having nutritious substances like protein, iron and zinc in high quantity. This year’s Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to the World Food Program is a big achievement. India is happy that our contribution and association with it has been historic,” he added.

Prime Minister congratulated everyone on the occasion of World Food Day.

“I congratulate those who are continuously working to eradicate malnutrition from the world. Farmers of India, our agricultural scientists, Anganwadi and Asha workers, are the strong fort of the movement against malnutrition,” he said.

The Prime Minister also dedicated to the nation 17 recently developed biofortified varieties of eight crops on World Food Day.

The event marks the highest priority accorded by the government to agriculture and nutrition and is a testament of the resolve to completely eliminate hunger, undernourishment and malnutrition.

It was being witnessed by Anganwadis, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Organic and Horticulture Missions across the country.

Head of Tibetan government-in-exile meets US special coordinator – News in India by Post24x7

2020-10-16 13:28:00
China

NEW DELHI :
In a move that is expected to exacerbate frictions between the US and China, the head of the Tibetan government-in-exile in India, Lobsang Sangay, on Thursday met the newly appointed US special coordinator for Tibetan issues Robert Destro.

Sangay, who lives in exile in India and heads the Central Tibetan Authority shared a picture of his meeting with Destro in Washington on Facebook.

“Great honor to meet with the Special Coordinator on Tibetan Issues Robert A Destro. This is the first time in six decades, a Sikyong (President) of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) was formally invited inside the State Department,” Sangay said in his post.

Sangay also took the opportunity to thank US secretary of state Mike Pompeo for appointing Destro as the special coordinator earlier this week – something the Chinese foreign ministry responded sharply to on Thursday. “I want to thank the State Department for acknowledging the democratically elected leader of CTA and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for approving the visit. History is made today!” Sangay said in his post.

Destro was on Thursday confirmed as the special coordinator for Tibetan issues, after Pompeo named him to the post earlier this week. The appointment is seen as a move to exert pressure on China on the autonomy of Tibet and bring issues concerning human rights and forced labour to the fore. Incidentally, Destro was part of a delegation visited Taiwan recently with US undersecretary of state for economic growth Keith Krach.

News reports said Pompeo had criticised the Chinese government in a statement in which he said that the US “remains concerned with the PRC (People’s Republic of China)’s repression of the Tibetan community, including the lack of meaningful autonomy, the deteriorating human rights situation in Tibetan areas, and severe restrictions on Tibetans’ religious freedom and cultural traditions within China.”

China had hit back calling the appointment an attempt to interfere in China’s domestic affairs. Foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said the appointment is a case of political manipulation. “Tibet affairs are China’s internal affairs that allow no foreign interference. The setting up of the so-called coordinator for Tibetan issues is entirely out of political manipulation to interfere in China’s internal affairs and destabilise Tibet. China firmly opposes that,” Zhao told reporters on Thursday.
