Tamil Nadu continued to witness record single-day spike in fresh coronavirus cases for the third straight day, pushing state’s Covid-19 count beyond 78,000. The second-highest numbers in a single day were 3,645 new virus cases reported on Friday.
With 3,713 new Covid-19 cases, the total number of coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu has now reached 78,335, according to state’s health department.
The death toll in the souther state increased to 1,025 after 68 more virus-related fatalities were reported in the last 24 hours, the authorities added.
Of the new cases reported, eight patients who arrived in Tamil Nadu from abroad tested positive in the state. In addition to them, 81 passengers who arrived from other Indian states by rail, road or air, tested positive in the state as well.
Active cases in the state have reached 33,213 while as many as 44,094 have been discharged from the hospitals after fully recovering from the virus. The recoveries also include 2,737 new recoveries from today.
Of these, 48,346 patients are males, 29,968 are females and 21 are transgender patients.
There are 89 functioning Covid-19 testing facilities in the state so far out of which 42 are private while the rest belong to the government.
According to the state government, a total of 34,805 samples were tested today. Over 10 lakh samples have been tested for the virus lakh till date. This is the highest number of samples tested in a single day, so far.
Tamil Nadu remains one of the worst-hit states in the country in terms of coronavirus cases and deaths. The Covid-19 count in the national capital also crossed 77,000 on Friday. The biggest contributor, however, is Maharashtra with more than 1.5 lakh cases so far and over 7,000 virus-related deaths.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday told the ministers that eight states, including Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, contributed 87% of total deaths due to novel coronavirus in India. Along with that, the health ministry also informed the group of ministers that the eight states were also the biggest contributor to active cases, about 85.5%.
Meanwhile, coronavirus cases in the country breached the 5 lakh-mark on Saturday after states added 18,552 new cases in the last 24 hours. The total number of confirmed Covid-19 patients in India has reached 5,08,953, according to latest Union Health Ministry data.
The current total includes 1,97,387 active cases. 2,95,881 Covid-19 cases have been cured or discharged from the hospital. The total recovery now stands at 58.13%. The death tally has also increased to 15,685, it added.
